Artist Statement
My recent prints explore weather patterns, times of day, the seasons, and more than anything else, the “Golden Hour” of light during sunrise and sunset. I’m interested in how all these moments can convey an emotional state, which I relate to subjectively. The intuitive exploration of color theory, and principles of limited palette, derived from the oil painting tradition, informs how I proceed with each layer of color and shape.
For several years now my subject has been the Oregon Coast and the Cascade Mountains. I reference other artist’s work I admire; Kawase Hasui, Elton Bennett, Tom Killion, James Lavadour, and Ken Auster are some of my favorites. I work from drawings, photographs and memories when starting a new project, and go through various art books for developing the initial compositions.
